“All Monsters Destroyed?” Well no, of course not. I wish the things that became the common themes in my weekly column at Screen Anarchy over the course of the past 4+ years could be called “resolved” — but really, they’ve just become part and parcel of the fabric of our conversations around pop culture in ever-increasing measure.
Still, I have to confess that I seem to have run out of things to say in the format of my weekly column. As such, I’ve informed the Screen Anarchy editorial team that I’ll be moving to reserve status on the staff. I’ll still pitch an idea here and there, I’m sure, and I’m definitely going to continue to be a voice on the site… but Destroy All Monsters, as a column, has run its course.
I owe a big debt to Todd Brown and Peter Martin for supporting me throughout the years, and to Ben and Kurt and Ard as well, who have been such vocal champions of the content. Of course, every single reader who has ever had anything nice to say about what I’ve had to write has been a huge part of what’s made this so much fun: some people who I only know online, and who I respect immensely, have been such enthusiastic cheerleaders for the column that it’s a real wrench to think of leaving it behind.
Still, per Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade vs. The Crystal Skull, I think it’s better to know when it’s time to ride off into the sunset. I’m still working on The Cinema of Survival: Mad Max Fury Road, which I hope to bring to you as an actual, published book someday. Till then, I’m hugely excited to be part of the team bringing you this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Come see us!
I’ll just close by posting some of my favourite pieces from my time at Screen Anarchy. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.
